How to paint plastic?

Painting automotive exterior plastics requires adequate preparation and a careful procedure to ensure a uniform and long-lasting finish.

In particular, it is good to follow these steps:

  • Clean the surface : Before applying any paint make sure the plastic surface is completely clean and free of grease, dirt and contaminants. Use a specific detergent or degreaser for plastics
  • Sand (if necessary) : If the plastic is rough or has imperfections, light sanding can help create a smooth surface. Use fine-grit sandpaper for this purpose
  • Protect surfaces : Protect surrounding areas, such as body paint, with masking tape or paper tape to prevent unwanted splashes
  • Apply primer (optional) : For particularly porous or difficult plastics, apply a primer specifically for plastics. This will improve the adhesion of the paint. Read the manufacturer's instructions carefully in this regard. The Care plastic paints , for example, have the advantage of being primerless, meaning they do not require any primer for perfect adhesion to the plastic
  • Apply paint : Shake the container of Texturizing gray / Texturizing black or Paint gray / Paint black spray paint well. Spray the paint in light, even layers, holding the bottle at an appropriate distance from the surface (generally 20 to 30 cm). Be sure to overlap each coat slightly to avoid streaking
  • Dry : Let each layer dry for the time indicated on the spray can of auto plastic paint. Avoid touching or handling the surface while drying
  • Layer (optional) : If you want more complete coverage, you can apply multiple layers of paint, allowing to dry between layers
